This female elephant was feeding on some Jackalberry trees in Kruger National Park. The different textures in this shot - on the legs, ears, eyes, trunk, and tusk - make this really work as a black and white shot.

While driving down the Nossob road in the Kgalagadi during a sandstorm , visibility got so poor we decided to wait it out near a herd of Gemsbok (who were rather struggling with the same problem). They were all facing into the wind, creating a very nice pattern - but due to the continuously shifting sand clouds, it was a challenge to find a composition that worked.

A lion's life in one photo: heavily scarred from fighting with other lions (the fresh scars stem from a small dispute with his brother, about who got to eat first), and soaked in blood from feeding. Besides eating and fighting over food, lions spend most of their time sleeping, and this photo caught him grooming himself before his after-lunch nap
